Oculus Helps Samsung Gear VR Add Controller, Targets Google Daydream
Barcelona – Tech giant Samsung rolled out a modest lineup of tech gadgetry at Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona today including a stylus, an updated Gear VR headset and 2 new tablets.
The global mobile tech conference hasn’t even officially started and we’ve already seen a new DJI drone a well as a pre announcement for the Samsung Galaxy S8 release on March 29th.
But back to VR. The addition of a separate physical controller for the VR headset means users have one handed control which also features a touchpad for in-app gestures and a trigger the lets you select, grab, take aim, and fire.
So you see where this is going? Gaming.
Over 70 game titles employing the Gear VR remote are in development, but no specifics yet. And with the addition of the separate controller this means Samsung is putting Google’s Daydream headset square in it’s sights. But given the hardware differences between Gear VR and Daydream, we have to say it’s Google that is seriously in catch-up mode.
Field of view on the new Gear VR headset is 101 degrees, which surpasses the 90 degrees of Googles Daydream. Another +1 for Samsung.
While the current Samsung Gear VR headset costs $100, pricing for the new Samsung Gear VR is still to come. Stay tuned.
