Travel Wearable: Carnival Ocean ‘Medallion’ Adds Service & Customization To Your Cruise
Starting in 2017, Princess Cruise Lines will be the first member of the Carnival Cruise family to issue wearable technology for it’s passengers. Called Ocean Medallion Class, the device is designed to enhance the overall passenger experience in a variety of ways from service enhancements, security improvements and more.
Included in the price of your cruise, the Ocean Medallion is a small wearable device (about the size of a quarter) that enables extraordinary guest experiences to help make cruising more personal and simple than ever before. Each Medallion is a unique, encyrpted digital identity, that communicates with thousands of sensors onboard your ship and in port.
In addition to using your Medallion for payments, as a stateroom key and speeding up embarkation it also allows Crew to see information they can use to serve you better. While you must carry a Medallion while on board, it’s up to you how much or little you want to take advantage of the whole experience.
Once you’ve booked your cruise, Carnival will ship your Medallion to you prior to departure with your name, ship and sail date laser etched on it. You can wear it in a wristband, as a pendant or simply leave it in your pocket.
Through your Ocean Medallion online portal, you’ll be identifiable by your photo when making any purchases with your Medallion, and uploading important travel documents your Compass profile helps to speed up embarkation and enhance security.
Two key service experiences being offered via the Ocean Medallion are ‘Here & Now’ and ‘There & Then’. As the names imply, Here & Now lets you order food and drinks from almost anywhere, to have delivered to you right away. With There & Then, the service allows you to pre-order amenities ahead of time to be delivered to you at a future location.
Carnival’s Regal Princess will be the first ship in the fleet to offer Ocean Medallion Class service beginning in November 2017. That rollout will lead to the Royal Princess in January 2018, Caribbean Princess in March 2018 and the Island Princess in May 2018.
Guests have the option to opt out of the Medallion either on their own or with the assistance of crew by downgrading the device to ‘safety only’ mode.
While Princess Cruises is the first to participate in the program, there is no word yet on whether it will be extended to other members of the Carnival family such as Holland America, Carnival Cruise Line, or Cunard.
With the Ocean Medallion, Carnival joins a very short list of travel providers like Disney and Universal Studios who have tapped into wearable tech as part of the guest experience.
